On Thursday morning, John M from Brooklyn NY was slapped with a lawsuit for causing an accident which led to the injury of a man who was riding a bike. Two weeks earlier John was sitting in his car which was parked at the front of his house with an open door for a long time. According to reports, John was busy reading his emails on his phone and did not close the door during that period of time. All of a sudden, a man riding a bike who happened to be passing by hit the open door hard and fell to the ground, wounding himself seriously in the process.
While the unexpected lawsuit came as a surprise to John, by the looks of it, he was in no mood of paying the fine since according to him, it “wasn’t his fault.” John hired an attorney and decided to challenge the lawsuit that he’d been given. While the process was normally a long one, John soon realized thanks to his attorney that he was in fact not to blame for the whole issue mainly because of one small detail.
John did not realize how much time, money and efforts he had just saved having a front door home security camera installed. John and his lawyer went through the footage, which clearly revealed that the car’s door was indeed open for a long time. Since the law states very clearly that if the car door was open for a short period of time, and the rider could not save himself from hitting the door, the liability falls on the car driver, unlike John’s case where his door was open for a long time. The lawsuit was dropped immediately once the lawyer presented the evidence and John was able to save himself from being dragged to court and a long legal battle thanks to the security camera ha had installed.
